In the Rain

This blog documents the making of the film In the Rain.

So close!

Yesterday we shot out Jordan (Dylan), and today we shot out Richard (McKinley) and Sophie (Lauren)! If things go as planned, we should be done after 3 more days of shooting! We’re finally getting footage that involves rain, too!

We’re shooting again!

One of the greatest challenges of making a student film is the fact that you have to work  around students’ schedules. Many members of our cast and crew were gone over the summer, so we decided to take a break until they got back into town. Now that school is back in session we have started shooting again, and so far things have gone pretty well.

Our first shoot of the term was last weekend. Bruce (Jackson in the film) was nice enough to let us shoot some scenes at his house while he was out of town. We had to use this location for the remaining scenes at Derek’s house after we had some problems getting the first location again. We shot a quick scene with Derek and Lauren on Friday afternoon, which went quite well. We got off to a slow start on Saturday morning, but still managed to shoot everything we planned (a number of scenes with Derek and Olivia) and get out of there around 3.

Sunday we shot what was previously Derek and Olivia’s “cafe” scene at Tim’s parents’ house, which ended up working out pretty well. The hardest part was making it look like a rainy day, when it was bright and sunny out. We sprayed a hose outside the window and tried to shoot from angles that didn’t show the glowing white house across the street. We put as much light as possible on our actors to try to avoid a blown-out window. I think it will have to be brought down a little in post, but will hopefully work out okay.

Next we shot a scene with Derek and Billy in the car outside, which was relatively simple.

We’re hoping to do another scene with Derek and Billy in the car tomorrow evening. This is a night scene, and we haven’t done one of these before, so there will be some lighting challenges. It also may be raining. If we can get set up just before sunset, I think we can make it work, as long as we can keep the equipment dry. We may do some expermenting tonight to see what works best.
